Camera Shy? How to Easily Create Video Content for Your Small Business

Updated: Apr 8

We get it—the world is obsessed with video. But if you're a small creative business owner, you probably didn't sign up to become an influencer for your own brand. The pressure to constantly create engaging and cool video content is real, and it’s not always easy.

Let’s normalize that: Video creation is not easy.

That’s exactly why I’m here to walk you through three solid strategies for capturing video content for your business—without ever having to step in front of the camera if you don’t want to.

Strategy #1: Capture Your Processes (Even If They Seem Boring)

The easiest way to create engaging content is by simply documenting what you already do. This means capturing your processes from your point of view—think “Day in the Life” or “How I [task] as a [business owner].”

Examples:

  • How I collect honey as a full-time beekeeper

  • How I open the shop as a coffee shop owner

  • How I package orders as a small business owner

You might be thinking, But my process is boring! I promise you—it’s not. People love behind-the-scenes content, especially those who are curious about your field or considering starting a similar business.

Even if you’re not ready to post, just get into the habit of recording your daily work. Prop up your phone while you type, pack orders, or create. Over time, you’ll build a library of clips that can be used later.

This does two things:

  1. It gives you a stockpile of content to pull from anytime you need it.

  2. It builds your confidence and comfort with creating video content.

Strategy #2: Showcase the Life Improvement Your Product or Service Provides

If you want to see real results from your content, focus on the transformation your product, service, or offering creates for your customers. This kind of content helps your audience visualize the impact of what you do.

Example: A florist could capture the moment a bride sees her wedding bouquet for the first time, or a customer’s reaction to receiving a surprise bouquet delivery. These small moments tell a powerful story and evoke emotion, making your content more engaging and shareable.

Think about the true benefit of your work and find ways to capture that experience in video.

Strategy #3: Hire a Videographer (Or a Creative Team Member) Once a Month

I know what you’re thinking: Liz, of course, you’re suggesting this—you’re a videographer!

But hear me out. Even if you don’t want to be the face of your brand, having someone else capture you working is a game-changer. It allows for more dynamic, human-centric content without requiring you to be front and center in a traditional sense.

Your videographer doesn’t need to be a pro. A creative team member, friend, or even a family member with an eye for video can do the job. One hour of footage per month can provide an entire month’s worth of varied content—especially if you switch outfits, settings, or tasks.

Final Thoughts

These three strategies—documenting your processes, showcasing life improvements, and leveraging a videographer—can help you consistently create valuable video content without forcing you into the spotlight.
