Why I Help Small Businesses Optimize Their Digital Presence & Content Marketing (My Story)

Welcome to Essence Presents! My name is Liz, and I’m the head photographer and content strategist here. Today, I want to share my journey—how I got into this work and why I’m so passionate about helping small businesses optimize their digital presence through media production and content marketing.


A Journey Through Marketing and Media

Back in 2019, I was working as an account coordinator for an experiential marketing agency in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I traveled the country, producing pop-up events for big brands like Hotels.com, Behr Paint, Ben & Jerry’s, and Stonyfield Organic. It was an incredible experience—fast-paced, challenging, and rewarding.


I learned so much about marketing, people, and how to communicate with clients. Managing a solo tour for Stonyfield was a defining moment for me, proving that I could handle logistics and production at a high level.


Then 2020 hit. I was set to travel to Anaheim, California, for a major event when everything changed overnight. The South by Southwest event was canceled, and with it, so was my job. A few months later, I was laid off—and I never went back.


Finding My True Calling

During that time, I started a business and dove into digital marketing. My fascination with seasons had always been a guiding force in my life. I saw the natural cycles of life—how winter brings rest and summer brings expansion—and I wanted to create something that embraced this concept.


I launched Brilliant Pit, a passion project rooted in seasonal wellness, herbalism, and astrology. Initially, I created beauty products—like coffee eyebrow tint and rosemary hair oil—using locally grown herbs. I realized that what also truly excited me was capturing people in their element—documenting their passion, their work, and their essence.


A Life-Long Love for Visual Storytelling

My passion for video and music started when I was just 10 years old. My friends and I would create skits, commercials, and creative projects with my first video camera. Later, I pursued audio engineering in college but eventually shifted to Mass Communications: Media Production—a broader field that truly aligned with my skills.


My love for photography was rekindled during road trips out west with my family. Capturing landscapes and moments made me realize how powerful visual storytelling is. This realization led me to start photographing and filming entrepreneurs in my community—people who were deeply purpose-driven in their work.


The Birth of Essence Presents

I wanted to create a space where I could truly showcase the authenticity of small businesses. That’s how Essence Presents was born. The name itself reflects my mission: to present the very essence of what a business or individual stands for through photography and video.


One defining moment happened while I was working live audio events in a Boston ballroom. I remember seeing a chandelier casting the most beautiful, soft lighting over a room full of people—completely in the moment, alive, and present. That image stuck with me. It became a symbol of what I aim to capture: the raw, unfiltered, true energy of a person or brand.


My Mission: Capturing Purpose and Passion

Today, I work with small, creative, and wellness businesses that are deeply passionate about what they do. They aren’t just selling products or services; they’re sharing a mission, a purpose. In an overwhelming digital world, I want to anchor them back to their essence—why they started in the first place.


Whether it’s through photography, videography, or content marketing, my goal is to help small businesses tell their story in a way that truly resonates with their audience.
